The role of Geography in Ancient Greece. By william Costello

Geography has played a major role in the history of civilization. For instance Ancient Greece. There were hundreds of rocky-mountains that divided them. Because of this they each were isolated from each other and could not expand and create an empire like the Egyptians or the Persians. Since they could not expand through land, they used the seas to travel to the outside world. Since there are hundreds of natural bays, they had perfect places to store ships. This played a major role in Greece’s economy which relied on sailing for carrying cargoes of natural resources used for trade. Since they were such good sailors they traveled to other far away countries and brought back with them knowledge. Around 750 B.C. their cities started to become overpopulated so they began to move to the many islands and spread as far as Spain and Egypt. While they expanded so did their ideas and culture. But they were not friends with their neighboring city-states and they constantly fought. The geography did however help them fight the Persians from invading in the battle of  Thermopylae. This led to their demise because years later, Rome eventually conquered them because they could not work together.
